Protect Marriage

Many people don't know what is going on here in California about Proposition 8.

In 2000 California voters chose by a wide margin to define marriage between a man and woman. This year the California Supreme Court, (which included 4 judges from San Francisco), chose to overturn this vote and legalized same sex marriage.

In response, Proposition 8 has been put on the California ballot for the November 4 election. “Yes” on proposition 8 will amend the California constitution to include that only marriage between man and woman is recognized. It will also make it impossible for the State Supreme Court to overturn the law again.

If Prop 8 is not enacted, the consequences for California will be legalized same sex marriages as well as public schools will have to teach that same sex marriage is the same as traditional marriage.

Most importantly, the outcome for the California vote will have repercussions for the rest of the Country, many political activists believe that the rest of the country will follow California’s lead, if we win then this could be a great victory; however, a loss would be devastating and could change traditional marriage forever.

The church has been extremely active in this process and in an emergency meeting of stake presidents last month Elder Clayton of the Presidency of the Seventy advised that this is a top concern on the minds of the First Presidency. They have read letters in sacrament from the first presidency and every Saturday members of the church are going door to door to registered voters handing out pamphlets and educating people on the bill.

I just saw today an article on MSN about Brad Pitt donating to help gay marriage stay legal. It is amazing the war going on in this state about this issue. I urge you all to go the website and help in any way you can. If this bill does not pass it is only a matter of time before gay marriage is legalized in all states. Remember, we are not anti-gay, just pro-marriage.
